flaky skin forever?? |

hi my skin is very oily and flaky and extremely sensitive to everything... the flakes are allways on my skin and if i do nothing it will build up and seal my skin in a layer of "dead skin". even when i use a cleanser everyday (1*at night+jojobaoil) i still get very flaky and red. some areas are not very flaky and they are not at all red. what can be done about this.

You didn't say if you were using any medicines or topicals so we don't know what it is that could be causing this build up of dead skin.
Scrubs don't have to be harsh! Just make sure you're massaging gently as opposed to scrubbing. Pick a 'scrub' that has small grains and don't use more than a couple of times a week. One that a lot of people are having success with is Clean & Clear's blackhead clearing scrub which has very smooth grains. It has SA but since you're rinsing it off, it isn't drying like a lotion. I was going through a similar experience up until last week. My face was very dry and flaky and was also hard and, dare I say, crusty to the touch. Add to that the fact that it was very, very, itchy as well. I eased off the topicals by applying less and started rinsing off the SA which I'd been leaving on. This did wonders. It's still slightly dry and itchy but it looks miles better and no longer flaky. |

topicals | ||

Whenever I had a serious buildup of dead skin & flakiness, it was because the BP cream I used at night (and left on) never seemed to fully wash off.
This created layer after layer of dead skin, and god knows what else. I understand exactly what you're talking about and the problem with dead skin and oil is the fact that that combination is a recipe for acne. When dead skin mixes with sebum, a plug is formed. Elmyras is right - ease off the topicals! An exfoliating scrub such as the C&C Blackhead Clearing Scrub wouldn't be a bad idea either. Glycolic acid is also good for removing that dead skin - it's a liquid exfoliant and I used the Proactiv toner with pretty good results. Hope that helps and good luck! |

You want a solution to this?
Use nothing on your skin for a month. Wash with only water and a clean facecloth . The facecloth will do a great job at removing dead skin. If you still have very flaky skin use a very gentle moisturiser sparingly. I havent used any topicals for a year or so and i no stoped getting dry flaky skin after a few weeks. |

i have used harsh cleansers in the past and it have made my face so @#%$ up... i think that have given me this (chronic?) face condition... i have tried using only water on my face but it just adds up and i cant use scrubs and exfoliators coz they wreck my hyper fragile skin. last time i used a washcloth to get the flakes of i had to stay home for a week for my face to recover.
for 2 years i have used nothing but the gentlest cleansing available. this is keeping the layer from forming. but the flakes are still there and they are irritating my face making it red... now you see how complicated this problem is: the only thing that will solve my flake problem is exfoliation which is impossible because of the fragility of my skin...... and i cant just start using nothing on my face cuz then we got the buildup... im really locked up in this situation huh? any advise will be appreciated |

What products are you using on your face at the moment? Maybe you need to check the ingredients to see if any of them contain alcohol?

The Answer:
-Use extremely gentle facewashes and mosterizers. -Use tape to exfoliate your face everyday. I had the same problem as you, and this fixed it for me. I use duct tape, but most people use scotch tape. |

Tape is a remarkably gentle exfoliator, since it lifts flakes straight away instead of tearing them off with a shearing, rubbing motion like almost any other method of exfoliation.
I would try scotch tape before moving to duct tape (I use duct as well, every few days when my face gets a bit flaky, but it sounds like your skin is more sensitive than mine). |

Hello. I understand your situation. I haven't used any topicals in a LONG time and didn't intend to, but I got the same problem as you. My skin is pretty much clear, but it is dry and rough and splotchy and gross looking. I knew I needed something to get off the dead skin layer, but was afraid of peeling, redness etc. My skin is very sensative too.
After reading through many old posts I decided on C&C Blackhead clearing scrub. I don't have blackheads or zits, but wanted to try it because it is a a very mild acid treatment. I have used it only for a few days, but the results are already so amazing!! Please try it. It did not make my skin dry or iritate it. Instead my skin is much much smoother with no flakes and the tone is so much nicer. I'm confident in a few weeks time I will have the skin I've been working so hard for. Massage it gently in with your hands in the shower, concentrating on the driest, roughest areas. Let sit for a minute or so and rinse off. |

regular glycolic peels really help to regulate and normalize your skin growth - thus, creating soft new skin that is all one layer. read up on them and your diagnosed skin prob

i have a cleanser which contains poly hydroxy acids (which i guess means both Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids). will it be good enough?
btw yesterday i didnt use any cleanser at all i just got into a slightly warm shower and massaged very gently with my hands. but when i got out my skin was still oily and i wasnt even down to the "flake level" yet. then today it feels all tight red and flaky, and oily just because of one day without cleaning. and i can allready see how its starting to "cake up" all around my face and form small reddish areas.... i dont really see how this should do any good in the long run. anyway now im planning to go 3 days without any topicals, maybe exept from jojobaoil. and then one day where i use this pha cleanser..... is that a good regimen? will it help normalize my skin growth? (keep in mind that regular acid peels are way too strong for my skin..) |

Seborrheic dermatitis is very common, and dermatologists know some pretty good ways to fix it up. The most common thing to try is hydrocortisone cream, though, and it's available in nonprescription strengths like 1%.
I recommend the 1% cream called CortAid. Yes, it's a topical, but it won't dry your skin. I don't know quite how it works, but it is a steroid of some sort... applied topically, it fixes flakiness and stops itching. I have some quite long-term flakiness in other parts of my body that I've used this on periodically with great success. I was so relieved to find cortisone! Please, research and try it if you have seborrheic dermatitis, and consider a dermatologist as well. The cause of the disease is poorly understood (it happens when your skin, for whatever reason, reacts badly to yeast that is always present), but it's a common and well-known condition with several treatments available that often work. |

when I have really bad dry skin, and I mean really bad, because I do some crazy things to my skin. The only thing that works for me is to get some nogzema and leave it on for thirty minutes or so, until it dries into the skin. when its dry then I get into the shower because the steam of the shower helps and i take a washcloth and gently rub my skin in circular motions. This throughly removes layers of dead skin. I hate nogzema but it does wonders for this purpose.

I have had the same problem as you for over 2years. I know exactly how you feel about this excessive sebum build-up on the skin. Everything you have complained about, I have been through it. My skin is very sensitive as well.
Well, I have tried all sorts of cleansers, creams, lotions incl medicated ones and what not... Nothing has helped at all. It doesnt mean you should not try as something could help you!!! Well, I have now decided that until I sort out excessive oil production from the inside, nothing can be done. I am taking B5 to see if that can help reduce oilyness. I dont think it is a good idea for you to go without cleansing your skin properly for several days as sebum just builds up more and more blocking pores. It is necessary to remove it regularly so that you skin can breath. Since your skin is sensitive, you need to use some very gentle products, preferably chemicals-free, like organic skincare line Dr Hauschka. There must be some other brands around. Dont scrub your skin at all, when using some cleanser just spread it between your palms and press it onto the skin gently. I have got to run now but if you are interested in my skincare routine(how to effectively and gently remove sebum from the skin), please let me know and I will write later all the details. I was given training by Dr Hauscka's estetician. |

hi melina. its nice to know that im not all alone with this problem.
well.. the problem is i have to rub. coz if i dont rub the dead skin will build up even if i use a cleanser. and the problem is that rubbing causes irritation. i hope you will hang around this board because i may be very interested in your routine in the nearest future. I just have to test something with my skin for the next week or two. |

I had the same problem until I started doing a few different things...
1) I steam my face either every day, or every other day, depending on my schedule. I boil a pretty big pot of water and drape a towel over my head. I do this for about 15 minutes 2) The use of masks (while slightly effeminate...) will help - I use 2 Queen Helene products - the first is the Mint Julep Masque and then there's the Grape Seed Extract Peel Off Masque - this will remove a LOT of dead skin. Anything that remains is pretty much taken care of with the good ol' Scotch tape method! 3) Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub certainly couldn't hurt Hope that helps and let me know how you make out! |
